Honey Garlic and Ginger Wings
Note: This recipe was updated from our previous "Honey Garlic Wings" recipe.
I am excited to share with you our chicken dish, the Honey Garlic and Ginger Wings. Try this tasty and inexpensive dish and enjoy it with steamed rice, fried rice, or an Asian salad or with one of the side dishes recommended at the end of the recipe.
Honey Garlic & Ginger Wings are my go-to when I want something simple, flavourful, and crowd-pleasing. With a short hands-on prep time and a quick stovetop cook, these wings come out tender on the inside with a glossy, caramelized coating on the outside. They’re perfect for weeknight dinners, casual entertaining, or game-day snacking, and pair especially well with creamy sides like coleslaw or potato bake. This recipe cooked the whole chicken wings, which suits me when I am pressed for time. You can remove the wing tips if you prefer.
If you love that sweet-salty balance with a bit of warmth from ginger, these Honey Garlic & Ginger Wings will quickly become a favourite. The wings marinate in a simple, pantry-friendly sauce, then cook slowly under a lid before finishing uncovered so the glaze thickens and clings to every piece. Making your own sauce also saves money compared to buying specialty bottled sauces or marinades, while still giving you that rich, takeout-style flavor at home. The result is juicy, sticky wings that feel special enough for guests but are easy enough for any busy weeknight.
It’s a versatile dish that can easily support your meal planning. Pair it with plain boiled rice and sliced cucumber for a simple lunch or dinner, or serve it with fried rice and steamed broccoli for something a bit heartier. It’s also wonderful alongside garden salads, especially those with Asian-inspired dressings. This dish can be the hero of your meal or a satisfying side that also happens to be a budget-friendly source of protein.
I have an eco-friendly tip for you: instead of using cling wrap, cover the marinating dish with its own lid or another dish. If you’re using a round container, you can simply place a plate on top as a makeshift lid. If you’d like more ideas on sustainable living at home, you can read this post.

Ingredients
- 2 lbs chicken wings
- Black pepper, to taste
- 2/3 cup light soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/8 cup water
- 5 tablespoons honey, preferably local
- 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, very finely minced or thinly sliced
- 4 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed
Recipe Notes
- This recipe requires frequent turning and stirring, especially toward the end of cooking, to prevent burning.
- Keeping the pan covered is important to ensure the chicken cooks through.
- When you lift the lid to turn the wings, do it quickly so you don’t lose too much heat.
Directions
1. Marinate the wings. You can remove the wing tips before marinating them, if you prefer.

- In a glass or other non-reactive dish, combine the soy sauce, vegetable oil, honey, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and black pepper.
- Add the chicken wings and toss until they are well coated in the sauce.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 3 hours.
2. Start cooking
- Transfer the chicken and all of the marinade to a large frying pan.

- Add the 1/8 cup of water.
- Cover and cook over medium heat for 15 minutes.

- Every 5 minutes, quickly remove the lid, turn the wings over, and replace the lid so they don’t burn and continue to cook evenly.
3. Thicken the sauce and finish cooking
- Reduce the heat to low.
- Remove the lid and turn each wing over, making sure they are well coated in the sauce.
- Arrange the wings so they’re sitting in the sauce in a single layer as much as possible.
- Continue cooking on low heat for about 7 minutes, turning the wings regularly and pressing them gently against the pan with tongs to help the skin caramelize without burning.
4. Serve
- Remove the pan from the heat.
- Serve the wings hot with your favorite side dishes.
This dish pairs especially well with Creamy Coleslaw and Best Creamy Potato Bake.
